Belfast is the largest city in Northern Ireland and the city along with the surrounding area is also an administrative district. The Irish name for Belfast is Beal Feirste, after the river Feirste, which now is mostly directed through pipelines under the city. Belfast is located on the mouth of the Lagan River, near Belfast Lough. It is surrounded by several mountains, including Black Mountain, Cavehill and Castlereagh Hills.
Belfast 's city centre has been heavily renovated the last few years, but important buildings from Victorian and Edwardian times are still prominent. The world's largest drydock at the Harland and Wolff wharf is located in Belfast and the two giant cranes Samson and Goliath are famous landmarks. RMS "Titanic" was constructed at the Harland and Wolff wharf. |
